History

Le Jas des Papes was purchased in 2014 by Michel Audibert, the very first generation of the family to leave the Provence appellation. Michel, passionate about wines of the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, began the adventure with 6 hectares of grapevines before expanding the estate in 2017 to around ten hectares spread over different plots. The current configuration of the vineyard, due to its plot diversity, contributes to the uniqueness and richness of the Jas des Papes terroir.

It has now been run by winemaker JP Meuwesen since 2015, a great connoisseur of the terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and committed to maintaining biodiversity in the vineyard.

the jas des papes estate, rich in the diversity of its terroirs spread across châteauneuf-du-pape, is renowned for its organic wines of great finesse.

the
terroir

The Jas des Papes estate has around ten hectares in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, located among the lieu-dit of Saumades, Cabrières, Montolivet and Boucoup. The diversity of the plots, in terms of relief, soils and exposure, offers a unique richness and a wide aromatic palette. The estate covers three of the four typical terroirs of the appellation:

Saumades

Its full east exposure allows the grapevines to benefit from beautiful sunshine from the morning until the end of the afternoon. The clay-sandy soil is particularly conducive to anchoring the root system of the grapevines, allowing the grapes to ripen beautifully.

Cabrires

The red clay soils mainly located in the north of the appellation represent a terroir favourable to the development of the grapevines. In fact, clay constitutes a reservoir of water and nutrients essential for their proper development.

plateau de Montolivet & Boucoup

The rounded pebbles, symbols of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, give the grapes harmonious and optimised ripeness thanks to the heat of the soil captured during the day and redistributed at night. This natural protective layer is recognised for its exceptional quality of rich and concentrated juices.

The
Winemaker

JP Meuwesen
Winemaker of the Le Jas des Papes Estate

Originally from the great winegrowing region of Stellenbosch in South Africa, JP is passionate about wine and a great connoisseur of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. For him, these are wines with character that find their balance between power and finesse.

For JP, wine is a way for him to connect with the world, a stimulating and enriching means of interacting with nature and others.

His vision? “Producing pure, delicious wines while avoiding additives, with an organic approach that promotes the biodiversity in the vineyard and the balance of its soils.”

Our
Organic philosophy

Our vines are worked on with the strictest respect for the environment. The will to adopt an organic agriculture approach was taken on upon the purchase of the estate by the Audibert family in 2014. The estate has thus had the Ecocert organic certification since 2017.
